What a day!
We came in this morning and did some reading. We had our snack early, and left for the Storybook Theatre shortly after. We picked up our tickets and took our seats in the last 2 rows of the theatre. It was such a great time... we even got to talk to the actors at the end of the production. Ask your child to tell you all about it.
When we got back to school, we ate our lunch in the classroom. We listened to a story before we spent most of the afternoon outside.
REMINDERS:
Fun Lunch envelopes are DUE TOMORROW! It is our LAST of the year and no late orders will be accepted.
The June 2016 calendar went home today. It has important dates on it such as our last field trip to the Calgary Zoo which is on Tuesday, June 14th.

Back to Normal Friday
Good evening everyone! I apologize for the late post.
We started our morning with some quiet reading and practiced some addition and subtraction problems before gym. We continued to work on this after we came back.
After recess, Ms. Zimmermann's class did math and science work while Mr. Fisher's class went to music. When we were all together before lunch, we did our spelling test.
We continued with quiet reading after lunch, before Ms. Binks joined us to teach us some double digit addition strategies. We learned some of these strategies for single digit addition, but we also learned some new ones to help us with the bigger numbers. We practiced using these strategies until it was time to go home!
PLEASE be on the lookout for the Storybook Theatre field trip forms that were sent home TODAY! We would like the permission slips returned on Monday, May 30th with the $5.00 per student cost. If you are able to volunteer, please ensure you fill out that section of the form as well. Volunteers will be contacted on Monday night.

Everything Wednesday
Happy Wednesday!
Today we had a very busy, unusual day because we had a lot to do in order to prepare for the Spring Concert both tonight and tomorrow. We started our morning with quiet reading before we did some science. We started a new unit on Bees yesterday and today we learned about the life cycle.
Ms. Zimmermann's class went to rehearsal during recess, but we made up that lost time right after. When we all came back in before lunch, Mr. Fisher's class went to library, while Ms. Zimmermann's class read a story and talked about making connections to the world, ourself, and other texts.
After lunch, we did some more quiet reading before going to the gym to watch the tonight's performers practice one last time. We got to hear lots of different songs and instruments. When that finished, we went outside to play tag and kickball to make up for our lost Phys. Ed time today.

Happy Long Weekend!
Happy Thursday!
We did our spelling test as soon as we came in this morning as Ms. Zimmermann's class had a very busy day, and it was the only time to do it.
After spelling, Ms. Zimmermann's class went to Music and then Library, while Mr. Fisher's class did some addition practice before a quick movement break. We all got together to have snack and listen to a story.
At 10am, we all made our way to the gym, where the Teachers vs. Students hockey game was taking place. It was a great game, with a tremendous amount of effort put in by both teams. Some amazing goals were scored, and some even better saves. In the end, the teachers won with a score of 14 to 8. Congratulations to every student player who earned their way into the game!
REMINDERS:
There is NO SCHOOL both tomorrow and Monday. Enjoy your long weekend.

Whirlwind Wednesday
Happy Wednesday!
What a busy day we had today. We had a guest teacher in for Mr. Fisher this morning, and her name was Ms. Hunter. Quiet reading was the first thing on the agenda for today and then we worked on drawing and writing what worm homes look like. When we came back from Phys. Ed, we continued with our worm work before reading some of our novel Silverwing before recess.
After recess, Ms. Zimmermann's class listened to a story and did some catch up work while Mr. Fisher's class went to music and then library.
We continued with quiet reading after lunch before learning more about worms. Today was our last day studying worms, and we talked about why worms are important and what they eat. Some super cool facts were that worms can eat 10 tons of food in a year, and they can survive without food for up to 2 months.
We also had Buddies today where we played a math battle outside. We had just enough time to clean up our classrooms before we got ready to go home.
REMINDERS:
TOMORROW is our Spelling Test. Ms. Zimmermann's class also has library tomorrow. Please remember your books.
TOMORROW is the Teachers vs. Students Hockey Game. Those who are PARTICIPATING may wear a sports jersey of their choice.
TOMORROW is Early Dismissal (11am), and there is NO SCHOOL on Friday and Monday!

After lunch, we continued on with our quiet reading before Mrs. Grunert's class joined us to learn more about worms! Today we learned about their habitat and the type of environment they like to live in. We also did two science experiments with our worms, one of which was called Wet or Dry? and the other, Here Comes the Sun! Ask your child to tell you all about it.
We ended the day with a movement break and some more of our novel Silverwing.
REMINDERS:
THIS Thursday, May 19th is EARLY DISMISSAL (11AM). There is also NO SCHOOL on Friday and Monday for the Victoria Day weekend.
THIS Thursday is also the Reading... Give it a Shot! Teachers vs. Students hockey game. Those who read the required amount of minutes will be participating (they know who they are).

Wormtastic!
Good afternoon,
Today we started with a quiet read. Following that, we worked on our newspaper writing on bats. We are moving on to a new animal so it's important that we get this finished. The students are doing some excellent descriptive writing on the things they learned.
Today in gym, we did some activities outside. We could play frisbee, football, skip, or play soccer.
After gym, we continued to read from our book Silverwing. We learned about the echo chamber. The bats in the book tell their stories in the echo chamber and they stay there forever. Shade was taken to visit the echo chamber with one of the elders.
After recess, room 7 had music while room 8 did some ketchup.
Right before lunch we got our new word wall words. We wrote them down 3 times and used them in a sentences.
After lunch, we did some reading.
Once we were finished reading, we started on a new animal in science. Over the next few days we will be talking about worms. Today we learned the parts of a worm and labelled a diagram. We also got to see a worm and touch it if we wanted. Once we had looked at the worm, we wrote in our booklet. We described what a worm, "look like," "feels like," and "moves like."
Reminders, this is a short week. There is early dismissal on Thursday and no school on Friday.
Have a great evening!

More Subtraction.
Good afternoon!
We had a guest teacher in for Mr. Fisher today and her name was Ms. Hicks! We started our morning with some quiet reading, before working on 3 task cards with a partner. When we came back from gym, we continued working on our task cards before reading more of our novel, Silverwing.
After recess, Ms. Zimmermann's class did some yoga while Room 7 went to music. When we all gathered before lunch, we did some catch up!
We did some more quiet reading after lunch, before moving into more subtraction. We read a book called Subtraction Action and solved the questions as we read through the book. Some questions were tricky, like the fill in the blank ones... but Ms. Binks did some magic and showed us how to turn that into an addition question.
For example:
_____ - 6 = 9 CAN BE TURNED INTO... 9 + 6 = ______
We did a quick clean up before we got ready to go home!
REMINDERS:
Spring Carnival is TONIGHT from 6 to 8.
Review spelling test TOMORROW... that's 50 words!
Scholastic Orders are due back TOMORROW!

Subtraction!
Good afternoon,
This morning we started with a quiet read, then we did a partner read.
After that, we had gym. Today we started Badminton.
After gym, we worked on ketchup. We are really focusing on finishing some outstanding work as we get closer to the end of the year.
Following recess, room 8 had music while room 7 continued to work on ketchup.
When room 8 came back from music, room 7 went to the library.
After lunch, we read quietly. Room 8 went to library this afternoon because the learning commons will not be available tomorrow.
When room 8 came back from library, we started on subtraction. We answered the question, "what is subtraction?" We came up with a pretty good list.
We will be continuing to practice addition and subtraction until the end of the year.
Reminder, book orders are due Friday!

The Flying Fox Bat!
Good afternoon,
Today we started with a quiet read. After that, we worked on our Triple Scoop Words. We have a sheet that can write examples on for use later on. We learned what a Thesaurus is and how to used it.
In gym we played a new game that was kind of like dodgeball. One team had to try to get gold while other teams tried to hit them with balls.
After gym, we continued working on Triple Scoop Words and we read a little bit of Silverwing.
After recess, room 7 had music while room 8 worked on math.
Before lunch we did some increasing patterns and some skip counting. We had to have one problem done and give ourselves a mark before we could leave for lunch.
This afternoon, we started with quiet reading.
Then, we had science. We learned more about bats. We watched a video about the Flying Fox bat. It is the world's largest bat. It has a wing span of up to 6ft long. We also drew a picture of a bat's roost and labelled it. We could draw any type of roost as long as it was realistic.
Reminder room 7 and 8 have library tomorrow. Please return your books.

Another Language Monday
Happy Monday! We hope all our mom's had a FANTASTIC Mother's Day with their families.
It seems Friday's blog wasn't posted on time due to an issue with our server... it was however posted early this morning. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.
We started our morning with some quiet reading before we wrote 6 sentences in our journals about how we spent our weekend and what we did to celebrate the mom's in our lives. We stayed inside for gym today because it was cool outside. When we got back from gym, we continued working on our journal writing.
After recess, Ms. Zimmermann's class went to music, while Mr. Fisher's class read a story. When we all got together before lunch, we reviewed our 50 spelling words for this weeks test before using 3 different strategies to practice our words.
We did some more quiet reading after lunch, but we had to stop a couple times because it seems that we forgot how to read by ourselves, quietly at our spots. We then moved on to working on number line addition. Number lines are just one of the many strategies we used to help us add 2 numbers together, so we learned how to use them properly when adding big numbers together. Ask your child to show you how they use a number line!
Before cleaning up to go home, we worked on some language. We've been trying to use more juicy words in our writing, so we learned about a new strategy called Triple Scoop Words. These words get bigger and better with each scoop. For example... the word cold would be a one scoop word, where as frigid would be a triple scoop word.
REMINDERS:
Scholastic Orders are to be returned with payment no later than this Friday, May 13th!
Mavericks will be selling popcorn again to finish their fundraising commitment to Free the Children starting on Monday, May 9th at LUNCH RECESS outside. They will sell every Monday until they are sold out. Popcorn is $2.00 a bag.
The Calgary Board of Education is committed to providing students and staff with a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment that respects diversity and fosters a sense of belonging. With this in mind, the CBE is creating a system-wide Student Code of Conduct (Administrative Regulation 6005) with input from students, parents and CBE employees. This new code of conduct will apply to all CBE schools, and beginning in the 2016/17 school year, individual schools will no longer have their own codes of conduct. All CBE students are expected to abide by the new system regulation, which will be posted to our Administrative Regulation page http://www.cbe.ab.ca/about-us/policies-and-regulations/Pages/Administrative-Regulations.aspx.

Beautiful Friday
Happy Friday everyone!
We started our morning with quiet reading again before we had the chance to play Hangman or Word Scramble with a partner for one last chance to practice our spelling words for the week.
After we came in from outdoor Phys. Ed, we played a game of BINGO and read a story before recess. When we came inside, Ms. Zimmermann's class worked on math while Mr. Fisher's class went to music. When we were all together before lunch, we did our spelling test.
As today was so beautiful, we took advantage of the weather and did our quiet reading outside. When we came back to the classroom, we did some language writing. We are learning about non-fiction topics such as bats, so we are practicing descriptive writing using one main topic and 3 or more sub topics to enhance our work.

As the weather has been nice as of late, we have been having outdoor Phys. Ed.
PLEASE make sure your child has APPROPRIATE footwear (i.e. running shoes, NOT flip flops or open sandals). Proper footwear is important for safety, and students will not be allowed to participate without.
Mavericks will be selling popcorn again to finish their fundraising commitment to Free the Children starting on Monday, May 9th at LUNCH RECESS outside. They will sell every Monday until they are sold out. Popcorn is $2.00 a bag.
Parent Council has a message regarding the notice that was sent home for the Bottle Drive:
School Council is in great need of volunteer drivers and collectors to help with this Saturday’s bottle drive. Proceeds will go to fund the Grade 6 Farewell evening. If you are able to volunteer, please contact Meghan Cooper (403) 613-1516 or meghanbuchanan@shaw.ca. If you are unable to volunteer, but have bottles/cans to contribute, you are welcome to drop them at the school parking lot on Saturday, May 7 between 9 AM & 3 PM, or leave a marked bag on your doorstep for pickup. Thank you!
Gloomy Day
Good afternoon!
We started our morning with some quiet reading before getting started on 3 task cards before gym. We worked very quietly this morning and we think it's because it was so dark and gloomy outside.
When we got back to class after indoor gym, we continued working on our task cards before reading more from our novel Silverwing.
Because of the rain and wet conditions, we had an indoor recess today. Ms. Zimmermann's class then went to music and library while Mr. Fisher's class worked on an art activity.
After lunch, we did some more quiet reading before moving into science. Today we learned all about bats including their habitat, anatomy, and nutrition. We then did an activity where we had to write down some facts about fruit bats as well as labeling the different parts of a bat. Before we watched a video about how bats see where they're going (echolocation), we did a big classroom clean up.
REMINDERS:
SPELLING TEST is TOMORROW! Next week we will have 50 words for Review Week.
As the weather has been nice as of late, we have been having outdoor Phys. Ed.
PLEASE make sure your child has APPROPRIATE footwear (i.e. running shoes, NOT flip flops or open sandals). Proper footwear is important for safety, and students will not be allowed to participate without.

All About Mental Health
Hats ON to Mental Health was a great success in our classroom. Thank you to everyone who participated in ending the stigma surrounding this.
We started our morning with quiet reading before doing an activity in connection with mental health awareness. The activity was called, What's in Your Heart? and it involved us sectioning off portions of a heart and filling it with different things that we carry with us everyday. Some of us put down joy, love, family, frustration, and worried. Some sections took up more space in our hearts than others.
After outdoor gym, we continued working on filling our hearts. We took the last few minutes before recess to read more of our novel, Silverwing.
When we came inside, Mr. Fisher's class went to music and library while Ms. Zimmermann's class worked on an art project and finished up some other work.
We continued with quiet reading after lunch, before we moved into math. We played our Greedy Pig game that we learned about yesterday. I have included the game again today
(please check your internet settings if you are unable to access the game OR search: Gettysburg The Game of Pig) for anyone who'd like to play.
Greedy Pig
After math, we did some more work regarding mental health and it's importance. We did an activity surrounding the Zones of Regulation which highlights what the different colours mean, as well as the different tools we can use to help move us out of that particular zone.
RED: angry, mad, frustrated, out of control
YELLOW: worried, excited, nervous, scared, stressed out
GREEN: happy, joyful, ready to learn, calm
BLUE: sad, embarrassed, sick, awkward, lonely, tired
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
REMINDERS (there are a lot today):
Ms. Zimmermann's class has library tomorrow... PLEASE remember to bring your books back!

Math and Sunshine
We kicked off our morning with some quiet reading, before we continued working on our journal writing from yesterday.
We went outside again for Phys. Ed today and practiced throwing a football. When we came inside, we continued working on our journal writing before we read some more of our new book, Silverwing.
After recess, Ms. Zimmermann's class went to music, while Mr. Fisher's class listened to a story. When we were all together before lunch, we continued to work on our Inuit Art and some other unfinished work.
We decided to go outside for our quiet reading this afternoon. We found some shady spots by the trees and read for a little while. When we came back inside, we worked on our addition strategies before learning about The Game of Pig (or Greedy Pig). You can find an online version at the following website, but the computer does all the addition for you...
Tomorrow, we will play this game while rolling dice and keeping score to see who our Grade 2 winners will be.
REMINDERS:
Tomorrow is Hats ON for Mental Health. You can wear ANY (appropriate) hat you like to support ending the stigma around mental health.
Mr. Fisher's class has library tomorrow! Please bring in your books if you'd like to take some new ones out.

Language Monday
Good afternoon,
We kicked off our morning with some quiet reading before talking about how to add detail to our written work. Some of the words we can use to add detail include when, once, if, and sometimes. We don't like using the word 'because' as it begins to sound repetitive.
When we came in from gym, we practiced using these words in our writing. After recess, Ms. Zimmermann's class did yoga while Mr. Fisher's class went to music. When we gathered before lunch, we got our new words for the week.
Ms. Z's Group:

Mr. F's Group:

This afternoon, we did some quiet reading before finishing our Inuit Clothing Art from Friday. We then went outside to read with our buddies before coming in to clean up and get ready for home.
REMINDERS:
Wednesday, May 4th is Hats ON for Mental Health. Please remember to bring/wear a hat to bring awareness to this cause.
Book Orders went home today, and they will be due sometime next week. A date will be set towards the end of this week.
