Only Half a Day to Go!

We're almost there... only half of tomorrow before we are on summer vacation!

Ms. Zimmermann's class had a fun day to celebrate our last full day of Grade 2. We finished our art project this morning, before we went outside to play kickball with Mrs. Grunert's and Mr. Fisher's classes. Mr. Fisher's class also had a fun morning. We watched a movie as a reward for filling our home reading jar. When we came back inside, we had a little celebration to end the year. This afternoon, we spent time cleaning up our classroom and attending the Grade 6 Farewell Assembly.

A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to our little celebration today. I really appreciate you doing that for our class.

REMINDERS:

Tomorrow is your last chance to return OVERDUE library books, or send the replacement cost.

If you will be away tomorrow, the school will need a prepaid, self-addressed envelope (8.5 X 11) to fit your child's report card. If you do not send one, you will be able to pick up their report card in September of 2016.

Last Buddy Day

Happy Wednesday!

We started our morning with some quiet reading. Ms. Zimmermann's class did some artwork that was related to our movie yesterday, Inside Out. We painted the palm of our hand white and each finger was painted a different color to represent all the emotions. Then we stamped our hand down, and tomorrow we will finish our work.

Mr. Fisher's class also started with quiet reading. Following that, we brainstormed our favourite book characters and did some writing about them. We came up with lots of good ideas!

We had outdoor Phys. Ed again today, and continued on with our stations. Ms. Zimmermann's class worked on some outstanding work until recess. Mr.  Fisher's class finished our writing on our favourite characters.

After recess, Ms. Zimmermann's class had music and continued with their catch up.

Mr. Fisher's class watched a tumble book. Then, we did some math. We did some question to review everything we've done this year.

When we came inside from lunch, Ms. Zimmermann's class did some more quiet reading. We then began our Number Review. This includes a bunch of information from throughout the year including place value, addition and subtraction, and greater/less than. We worked on this quietly and independently.

For the last part of our day, we met with our buddies outside.

REMINDERS:

Outstanding books MUST be RETURNED as soon as possible. Ms. Zimmermann's class has received replacement cost notices, ask your child if they got one.

No More Tuesdays in Grade 2

Good afternoon!

Today we started with our usual quiet reading. Mr. Fisher's class did a partner read after quiet read and caught up on some writing from the last couple days. Ms. Zimmermann's class wrote about how we would like to spend our summer vacation.

We had outdoor gym today and Mr. Fisher's class had music. After music, Mr. Fisher's class continued working on science. We looked for solids, liquids, and gases in a video we watched.

Ms. Zimmermann's class also worked on science this morning. We watched a video about fluids and talked about what we learned before we did our science experiment. We used eyedroppers to drop water onto a piece of wax paper. We recorded what shape the drops were, what happened when two drops were close together, and what happened if we added to a drop that was already there.

After lunch, we read a little bit more. Mr. Fisher's class then did their science experiment and ended the afternoon with an outdoor activity. Ms. Zimmermann's class watched the movie Inside Out as part of their Home Reading reward. We will be doing an activity that ties into the movie tomorrow.

REMINDERS:

Overdue library books need to be returned IMMEDIATELY. Those in Ms. Zimmermann's class who have outstanding books were sent home with a notice regarding the replacement amount for the missing items.

On Wednesday, June 22nd (TOMORROW), the school will have a SPIRIT DAY (Favourite Storybook Character) to end the year off with some Beluga pride. Earlier in the month we collected donations for the Fort McMurray forest fires and we raised over $700! Thanks to these generous donations, all students in the school are invited to participate and share their Beluga pride.

If you would like, you can come to school tomorrow dressed as your favorite book character!
  • costumes may not include masks or any props that will distract from learning or cause issues at recess
  • costumes may not be gory or violent in nature and must adhere to the school's dress code           (no spaghetti straps, bare stomachs, short skirts/shorts, etc.)

More Math

Good afternoon! We're down to only 6 more days of school... it's so hard to believe.

As per usual, we did some quiet reading in the morning before getting the chance to complete 3 task cards with a partner. This is a great way for us to practice different ways of writing our Word Wall words and using them in a sentence. We went outside for a chilly gym, but continued on with our task cards when we came inside.

After gym, Ms. Zimmermann's class had music before we watched a video about how to make the same items float and sink through different methods.

Mr. Fisher's class worked on some language arts. We did some writing on Father's Day and accompanied it with a special project.

When we came in from lunch, we did some more quiet reading. This afternoon we continued learning about greater than and less than. Today we reviewed the symbols before learning about comparing numbers and ordering them from greatest to least. If we finished our work early, we did some catch up work which includes a reflection from our in-school trip about Boats & Buoyancy and our trip to the Calgary Zoo.

Mr. Fisher's class did an art project based on the work of Henri Matisse this afternoon. We learned about Matisse and what type of painter he was. Then, we created our own piece based on his work. We talked about different types of lines and how we could include these in our work.

REMINDERS:

Overdue library books MUST be RETURNED tomorrow to avoid receiving a replacement cost notice. Please do your best to find these books.

So Much Math

Happy Wednesday!

We kicked off our morning with some quiet reading before having a special guest come visit us. Allison's mom brought in a piece of a large honeycomb she collected from a family friend's farm. The bees had built a large hive in the eaves of a barn.

After outdoor Phys. Ed., we came in to finish up math and write a reflection about our Boats and Buoyancy in-school field trip last week. When we came in from a windy recess, we worked on a special project that will go home before the end of the week.

Mr. Fisher's class also worked on a special project that will be sent home this weekend. Be on the lookout!

We continued with quiet reading after lunch, before having Ms. Binks join us for math. She taught us a lesson about comparing numbers. Some of the terms we learned include: greater than, less than, equal to. Ask your child what these mean and what the symbols look like for each. We did two different activities to practice what we learned.

Mr. Fisher's class worked on an art project this afternoon. Then, we finished our day with an outside activity.

REMINDERS:

Ms. Zimmermann will be taking photos of her students on Thursday and Friday for a special end of the year project. It is up to your child whether or not they would like to do their hair or wear something special. All will be revealed next week... please be patient with us.

PLEASE return any OUTSTANDING library books. Notices for replacement fees of items will be sent home Friday or Monday.

We have FILLED the marble jar for our Home Reading. Stay tuned to find out how we will celebrate!

Monday 13 June 2016

Language Monday

Good afternoon!

We had quite the busy day today with lots of different things going on. This morning, we started with some quiet reading before writing in our journals about how we spent the weekend. We had to include one noun, one verb, and one adjective in each sentence and trace them in different colours. We had outdoor Phys. Ed today and continued on with our writing when we came back inside.

Mr Fisher's class did the same journalling activity as Ms. Zimmermann's class.

After recess, we had some show and tell before doing yoga. We then got our new spelling words for the week and practiced them using play dough. This will be the last week of spelling words for those students who are in Ms. Zimmermann's spelling group.

Mr. Fisher's class read a story after recess. We also did some finish up work on Boats and Buoyancy.

It's free to join and they have weekly prizes, plus a grand prize if you choose to participate. We then went outside to do some more reading with our buddies. When we came inside, we did a good clean of the classroom before collecting our homemade tie-dye butterflies to take home!

Mr. Fisher's class also attended the library presentation this afternoon. We also had music this afternoon because we switched with Mrs. Young's class.

REMINDERS:

Tomorrow is our field trip to the Calgary Zoo! Please make sure that your child wears weather appropriate attire and comfortable shoes. Also ensure that they have a snack, lunch, and water bottle to get them through the day.

Ms. Zimmermann sent home Library Notices regarding OVERDUE items that need to be returned as soon as possible. Any items not returned by Friday will have a letter with a replacement cost sent home. Please ask your child if they received a notice.

Math and Science Overload

What a BUSY Wednesday!

We started our morning with some quiet reading. Our Volunteer Tea display was still assembled, so we took some time to take it apart before Phys. Ed. We played Capture the Gold in gym, and when we came inside, we continued on with our math work. We had 6 Must Do questions and we had to pick another 4 from the Should Try list to do as well.

After recess, Ms. Zimmermann's class continued on with our double-digit subtraction strategies before playing some Silent Ball. Meanwhile, Mr. Fisher's class had music and then went to library.

When we came in from lunch, two groups from the Grade 5/6 class came to present an infomercial about a flying device they created. They were great and we asked some really good questions.

We spent the rest of the afternoon exploring our new science unit of Boats and Buoyancy. We learned what boats are and what buoyancy means before completing an experiment about floating and sinking. We had a number of items such as a dime, cork, pencil, crayon, paper clip, LEGO piece, felt, wax paper, marble, rock, pumice, eraser, and wood to use during the experiment. First, we guessed if the item would float or sink, then we tested it out in a big tub of water. There were definitely some surprises, but we learned a lot.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

On Friday, we will be having our Sports Day after lunch. Please make sure that you are wearing appropriate clothes and shoes to be outside all afternoon. Students are encouraged to bring water bottles and hats. If you choose to wear sunscreen, please apply it at home in the morning. Some of the stations for Sports Day will include water. Students can choose whether they participate in these stations. They may bring a change of dry clothes for afterwards, otherwise they may come home wet. We are asking that everyone wears Sporty Spunky Socks on Friday.

REMINDERS:

Ms. Zimmermann's class has Library tomorrow. ALL BOOKS are DUE BACK TOMORROW so Mrs. Paolini can clean up and organize the Learning Commons before the end of the year.

The permission forms for the Grade 2 trip to the zoo went home this afternoon.
There is NO COST for your child to attend this field trip.
Forms are DUE back to their teachers by Monday, June 13th AT THE LATEST.
We appreciate your promptness with this.
The WHITE forms are only to be returned if you are able to volunteer for this trip; please recycle if you are unable to volunteer. Volunteers will be contacted to confirm their attendance.
Ms. Zimmermann's class MUST return the PINK and GREEN forms as they are the most important.

Sports Day & Fun Lunch on Friday, June 10th... that's THIS Friday!

Whirlwind Wednesday

Happy Wednesday!

What a busy day we had today. We had a guest teacher in for Mr. Fisher this morning, and her name was Ms. Hunter. Quiet reading was the first thing on the agenda for today and then we worked on drawing and writing what worm homes look like. When we came back from Phys. Ed, we continued with our worm work before reading some of our novel Silverwing before recess.

After recess, Ms. Zimmermann's class listened to a story and did some catch up work while Mr. Fisher's class went to music and then library.

We continued with quiet reading after lunch before learning more about worms. Today was our last day studying worms, and we talked about why worms are important and what they eat. Some super cool facts were that worms can eat 10 tons of food in a year, and they can survive without food for up to 2 months.

We also had Buddies today where we played a math battle outside. We had just enough time to clean up our classrooms before we got ready to go home.

REMINDERS:

TOMORROW is our Spelling Test. Ms. Zimmermann's class also has library tomorrow. Please remember your books.

TOMORROW is the Teachers vs. Students Hockey Game. Those who are PARTICIPATING may wear a sports jersey of their choice.

Once the concert is done, students will be picked up at their classrooms. We would appreciate it if you stayed for the whole concert. Thank you.

Monday 16 May 2016

Wormtastic!

Good afternoon,

Today we started with a quiet read. Following that, we worked on our newspaper writing on bats. We are moving on to a new animal so it's important that we get this finished. The students are doing some excellent descriptive writing on the things they learned.

Today in gym, we did some activities outside. We could play frisbee, football, skip, or play soccer.

After gym, we continued to read from our book Silverwing. We learned about the echo chamber. The bats in the book tell their stories in the echo chamber and they stay there forever. Shade was taken to visit the echo chamber with one of the elders.

After recess, room 7 had music while room 8 did some ketchup.

Right before lunch we got our new word wall words. We wrote them down 3 times and used them in a sentences.

After lunch, we did some reading.

Once we were finished reading, we started on a new animal in science. Over the next few days we will be talking about worms. Today we learned the parts of a worm and labelled a diagram. We also got to see a worm and touch it if we wanted. Once we had looked at the worm, we wrote in our booklet. We described what a worm, "look like," "feels like," and "moves like."

Reminders, this is a short week. There is early dismissal on Thursday and no school on Friday.

Have a great evening!

More Subtraction.

Good afternoon!

We had a guest teacher in for Mr. Fisher today and her name was Ms. Hicks! We started our morning with some quiet reading, before working on 3 task cards with a partner. When we came back from gym, we continued working on our task cards before reading more of our novel, Silverwing.

After recess, Ms. Zimmermann's class did some yoga while Room 7 went to music. When we all gathered before lunch, we did some catch up!

We did some more quiet reading after lunch, before moving into more subtraction. We read a book called Subtraction Action and solved the questions as we read through the book. Some questions were tricky, like the fill in the blank ones... but Ms. Binks did some magic and showed us how to turn that into an addition question.

For example:

_____ - 6 = 9 CAN BE TURNED INTO...  9 + 6 = ______

We did a quick clean up before we got ready to go home!

REMINDERS:

Spring Carnival is TONIGHT from 6 to 8.

Review spelling test TOMORROW... that's 50 words!

Scholastic Orders are due back TOMORROW!

Subtraction!

Good afternoon,

This morning we started with a quiet read, then we did a partner read.

After that, we had gym. Today we started Badminton.

After gym, we worked on ketchup. We are really focusing on finishing some outstanding work as we get closer to the end of the year.

Following recess, room 8 had music while room 7 continued to work on ketchup.

When room 8 came back from music, room 7 went to the library.

After lunch, we read quietly. Room 8 went to library this afternoon because the learning commons will not be available tomorrow.

When room 8 came back from library, we started on subtraction. We answered the question, "what is subtraction?" We came up with a pretty good list.

We will be continuing to practice addition and subtraction until the end of the year.

Reminder, book orders are due Friday!

Tuesday 10 May 2016

The Flying Fox Bat!

Good afternoon,

Today we started with a quiet read. After that, we worked on our Triple Scoop Words. We have a sheet that can write examples on for use later on. We learned what a Thesaurus is and how to used it.

In gym we played a new game that was kind of like dodgeball. One team had to try to get gold while other teams tried to hit them with balls.

After gym, we continued working on Triple Scoop Words and we read a little bit of Silverwing.

After recess, room 7 had music while room 8 worked on math.

Before lunch we did some increasing patterns and some skip counting. We had to have one problem done and give ourselves a mark before we could leave for lunch.

This afternoon, we started with quiet reading.

Then, we had science. We learned more about bats. We watched a video about the Flying Fox bat. It is the world's largest bat. It has a wing span of up to 6ft long. We also drew a picture of a bat's roost and labelled it. We could draw any type of roost as long as it was realistic.

Reminder room 7 and 8 have library tomorrow. Please return your books.

Have a great evening!

Another Language Monday

Happy Monday! We hope all our mom's had a FANTASTIC Mother's Day with their families.
It seems Friday's blog wasn't posted on time due to an issue with our server... it was however posted early this morning. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

We started our morning with some quiet reading before we wrote 6 sentences in our journals about how we spent our weekend and what we did to celebrate the mom's in our lives. We stayed inside for gym today because it was cool outside. When we got back from gym, we continued working on our journal writing.

After recess, Ms. Zimmermann's class went to music, while Mr. Fisher's class read a story. When we all got together before lunch, we reviewed our 50 spelling words for this weeks test before using 3 different strategies to practice our words.

We did some more quiet reading after lunch, but we had to stop a couple times because it seems that we forgot how to read by ourselves, quietly at our spots. We then moved on to working on number line addition. Number lines are just one of the many strategies we used to help us add 2 numbers together, so we learned how to use them properly when adding big numbers together. Ask your child to show you how they use a number line!

Before cleaning up to go home, we worked on some language. We've been trying to use more juicy words in our writing, so we learned about a new strategy called Triple Scoop Words. These words get bigger and better with each scoop. For example... the word cold would be a one scoop word, where as frigid would be a triple scoop word.

REMINDERS:

Scholastic Orders are to be returned with payment no later than this Friday, May 13th!

Mavericks will be selling popcorn again to finish their fundraising commitment to Free the Children starting on Monday, May 9th at LUNCH RECESS outside. They will sell every Monday until they are sold out. Popcorn is $2.00 a bag.

The Calgary Board of Education is committed to providing students and staff with a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment that respects diversity and fosters a sense of belonging. With this in mind, the CBE is creating a system-wide Student Code of Conduct (Administrative Regulation 6005) with input from students, parents and CBE employees. This new code of conduct will apply to all CBE schools, and beginning in the 2016/17 school year, individual schools will no longer have their own codes of conduct. All CBE students are expected to abide by the new system regulation, which will be posted to our Administrative Regulation page http://www.cbe.ab.ca/about-us/policies-and-regulations/Pages/Administrative-Regulations.aspx.

Beautiful Friday

Happy Friday everyone!

We started our morning with quiet reading again before we had the chance to play Hangman or Word Scramble with a partner for one last chance to practice our spelling words for the week.

After we came in from outdoor Phys. Ed, we played a game of BINGO and read a story before recess. When we came inside, Ms. Zimmermann's class worked on math while Mr. Fisher's class went to music. When we were all together before lunch, we did our spelling test.

As today was so beautiful, we took advantage of the weather and did our quiet reading outside. When we came back to the classroom, we did some language writing. We are learning about non-fiction topics such as bats, so we are practicing descriptive writing using one main topic and 3 or more sub topics to enhance our work.

REMINDERS:

As the weather has been nice as of late, we have been having outdoor Phys. Ed.
PLEASE make sure your child has APPROPRIATE footwear (i.e. running shoes, NOT flip flops or open sandals). Proper footwear is important for safety, and students will not be allowed to participate without.

Gloomy Day

Good afternoon!

We started our morning with some quiet reading before getting started on 3 task cards before gym. We worked very quietly this morning and we think it's because it was so dark and gloomy outside.

When we got back to class after indoor gym, we continued working on our task cards before reading more from our novel Silverwing.

Because of the rain and wet conditions, we had an indoor recess today. Ms. Zimmermann's class then went to music and library while Mr. Fisher's class worked on an art activity.

After lunch, we did some more quiet reading before moving into science. Today we learned all about bats including their habitat, anatomy, and nutrition. We then did an activity where we had to write down some facts about fruit bats as well as labeling the different parts of a bat. Before we watched a video about how bats see where they're going (echolocation), we did a big classroom clean up.

REMINDERS:

SPELLING TEST is TOMORROW! Next week we will have 50 words for Review Week.

As the weather has been nice as of late, we have been having outdoor Phys. Ed.

All About Mental Health

Hats ON to Mental Health was a great success in our classroom. Thank you to everyone who participated in ending the stigma surrounding this.

We started our morning with quiet reading before doing an activity in connection with mental health awareness. The activity was called, What's in Your Heart? and it involved us sectioning off portions of a heart and filling it with different things that we carry with us everyday. Some of us put down joy, love, family, frustration, and worried. Some sections took up more space in our hearts than others.

After outdoor gym, we continued working on filling our hearts. We took the last few minutes before recess to read more of our novel, Silverwing.

When we came inside, Mr. Fisher's class went to music and library while Ms. Zimmermann's class worked on an art project and finished up some other work.

We continued with quiet reading after lunch, before we moved into math. We played our Greedy Pig game that we learned about yesterday. I have included the game again today
(please check your internet settings if you are unable to access the game OR search: Gettysburg The Game of Pig) for anyone who'd like to play.

Greedy Pig

After math, we did some more work regarding mental health and it's importance. We did an activity surrounding the Zones of Regulation which highlights what the different colours mean, as well as the different tools we can use to help move us out of that particular zone.

RED: angry, mad, frustrated, out of control

YELLOW: worried, excited, nervous, scared, stressed out

GREEN: happy, joyful, ready to learn, calm

BLUE: sad, embarrassed, sick, awkward, lonely, tired

Math and Sunshine

We kicked off our morning with some quiet reading, before we continued working on our journal writing from yesterday.

We went outside again for Phys. Ed today and practiced throwing a football. When we came inside, we continued working on our journal writing before we read some more of our new book, Silverwing.

After recess, Ms. Zimmermann's class went to music, while Mr. Fisher's class listened to a story. When we were all together before lunch, we continued to work on our Inuit Art and some other unfinished work.

We decided to go outside for our quiet reading this afternoon. We found some shady spots by the trees and read for a little while. When we came back inside, we worked on our addition strategies before learning about The Game of Pig (or Greedy Pig). You can find an online version at the following website, but the computer does all the addition for you...

Tomorrow, we will play this game while rolling dice and keeping score to see who our Grade 2 winners will be.

REMINDERS:

Tomorrow is Hats ON for Mental Health. You can wear ANY (appropriate) hat you like to support ending the stigma around mental health.

Mr. Fisher's class has library tomorrow! Please bring in your books if you'd like to take some new ones out.

Language Monday

Good afternoon,

We kicked off our morning with some quiet reading before talking about how to add detail to our written work. Some of the words we can use to add detail include when, once, if, and sometimes. We don't like using the word 'because' as it begins to sound repetitive.

When we came in from gym, we practiced using these words in our writing. After recess, Ms. Zimmermann's class did yoga while Mr. Fisher's class went to music. When we gathered before lunch, we got our new words for the week.

Ms. Z's Group:

A Little Bit of Everything.

Good afternoon!

We had a very busy day today and there was a lot going on. Thank you to everyone who participated in Jersey Day!

Our morning started with some quiet reading before we did some more of our addition strategies. We are practicing lots of different strategies and trying new things to help us add big and small numbers together. Encourage your child to share some of the strategies that help them the most.

When we came back from gym, we had to work on 2 or more task cards with a partner quietly. Our spelling test is tomorrow so we wanted to practice our words a little more. After recess, Ms. Zimmermann's class did some catch up work before going to library. In the meantime, Mr. Fisher's class went to music and read a story.

After our Fun Lunch, we did some quiet reading before having a chance to do a partner read. We then spent some time finishing up our science experiment from yesterday which involved recording our data (what actually happened) and making a conclusion (what we learned). We took the rest of the day to do more math! We came up with 7 addition questions and we had to try 3 easier ones and 2 harder ones.

REMINDERS:

Tomorrow is our Spelling Test! Be sure to practice, practice, practice tonight so you're ready!

Blubber Experiment

Good afternoon!

We started our day with some quiet reading as it seems to prepare us for the day. Right before gym, we took some time to finish off our spelling work from yesterday.

After gym, we continued practicing our math strategies before we went outside for recess. When we came inside, Ms. Zimmermann's class went to music and then did some catch up work, while Mr. Fisher's class listened to a story and went to the library.

When we came in from lunch, we continued with some more quiet reading before moving onto a science experiment. We did some more work about hot and cold and how insulation changes the temperature of things. We talked more about blubber before beginning our experiment. Our experiment involved 3 tubs of water (i.e. cold, warm, and hot) and ziploc bags filled with vegetable shortening (acting as blubber). Students were surprised to feel the results as they each got to test the water both with and without the blubber bag. We will continue filling out our experiment worksheet tomorrow. Ask your child to tell you everything they learned during the experiment!

We did a short movement break, and read a story before we cleaned up to go home.

Math, math, math!

Happy Wednesday!

Today, we did A LOT of math. We started our morning with some quiet reading to try something new. We did such a great job settling down and reading for about 30 minutes. After our reading, we tried some mystery math before gym (i.e. 7 + _____ = 12).

We had a fire drill right as we were cleaning up for gym. As we were outside we went straight into gym and did fitness as it was our last day of outdoor phys. ed for the week. When we came inside, we worked very quietly on 3 task cards before recess.

After recess, Ms. Zimmermann's class went to music while Mr. Fisher's class listened to a story. While Ms. Zimmermann's class worked on some catch up work, Mr. Fisher's class had library.

This afternoon, we did some more quiet reading before Mr. Fisher read us a story. We all came together to work on some addition strategies that Ms. Zimmermann and Ms. Binks taught us. Once we brainstormed a bunch of different strategies, we got a chance to test them out on 5 different questions. All that math took us until the end of the day.

What is Adding?

Good afternoon,

Today our morning activity was a question on math. It was, "write down everything you know about adding." We will be working on addition and subtraction for the rest of the year. This was to start off of our unit.

After we wrote in our math books we got together at the carpet and came up with a list of things we know about adding. We came up with some great ideas. Then, we came up with a math problem so we could evenly distribute our playground equipment.

Noah gave us an adding strategy called, counting on.

After recess, room 7 had music while room 8  read a story. Until lunch we did ketchup.

This afternoon, we did a quiet read and then we finished up our math. After that, we met our reading buddies outside and did a playground clean up.

Don't forget to book a time for math showcase!!

Have a great evening!

Monday 18 April 2016

Igloos!

Good afternoon,

This morning we started by writing a letter to our favourite TV or cartoon character. We had to write six sentences and use lots of juicy words. We also had to make sure we used a proper letter writing format.

After that, we went outside for gym.

Following gym we worked on ketchup. We are trying to finish up a few projects because we will be wrapping up some units soon.

After recess, room 8 had music while room 7 read a story. For the last half hour before lunch we got our new word wall words.

This afternoon, we learned about the traditional homes of the Inuit people. They are called igloos. We talked about how igloos are built and how they keep people warm.

Then, we built our own igloo using sugar cubes. We were only given a certain amount of cubes and had to make sure to do some planning. It was tricky to get the cubes to stick together, but we will continue to work on it.

Remember math showcase is coming up this week, make sure to book a time!

Thursday 14 April 2016

Busy Day

Good afternoon,

This morning we started by quiet reading.

After quiet reading we did some language arts. Today we worked on a climbing story. We did our climbing story in our journal. While we working on this we had a visit from Mrs. Brink in grade 3/4.

Next, we did math. We did a number of the day. Our number of the day was 26. We had to write it, draw it, add, subtract, and we had to do some skip counting. We also made 3 increasing patterns. While we worked we had a visit from Mr. Beechey and Ms. Gaspar from grade 3/4. The teachers visited each other as a part of our professional development to get new ideas.

After recess, we did some task cards. Mr. Fisher and Ms. Zimmermann visited some other teachers while Ms. Binks and Mr. Sadowsky were with our classes.

This afternoon, we had silent reading.

We had a bit a switch up and we had our gym in the afternoon. We went outside and played a game. We played a game called "hula-hoop freeze tag." It's just like freeze tag but with hula-hoops.

Fun lunch forms are due tomorrow.

Spelling test will be tomorrow.

Wednesday 13 April 2016

Roll to 100!

Good afternoon,

Today we started with math practice. Our number of the day was 112. We had to add, subtract, write the next odd numbers, and write the next even numbers. We also drew our number using blocks. Then, we created an increasing pattern.

During gym today, we played a game. We had to tag other people by pulling out their "fox tail." For our "fox tails" we used a pinny.

After gym, we did ketchup. Today was our last day to work on our pen-pal letters. We will be sending them off today.

After recess, room 7 had music and library while room 8 worked on health.

Following lunch, we did our quiet reading. Then, Ms. Binks came to our class to work on math. Today, we made an assessment for our Roll to 100 game. We decided on what we should be marked on and created a scale to use.

To finish our afternoon we read from our book Polar Bears Past Bedtime.

Reminder that room 8 has library tomorrow, please bring back your book.

Reading Give it a Shot is still happening. If you read 100 minutes you get a hockey card. Students can read at home or at school.

The lost and found items will be taken in on Friday. Please stop by to have a look.

Tuesday 12 April 2016

Penpal Letters and Social

Good afternoon,

We started our morning by writing sentences that had a noun, verb, and adjective in each one. We had to trace over those words in certain colours. After gym, we continued working on our Penpal Letters. They will be sent out in the mail THIS Wednesday, so we are trying to get them done.

After recess, Ms. Zimmermann's class had music again while Mr. Fisher's class listened to a video story. We worked on some Social and Science work before lunch.

When we came in from lunch, we did some quiet reading and a partner read before we learned something new about Nunavut. Today we learned all about the weather they have there. Did you know that they have winter for 9 months of the year and the average temperature is -30 degrees Celsius. In their summer months, the average temperature is 9 degrees Celsius. We also found out that sometimes, Nunavut only gets 3 hours of sunlight as the sun rises and sets within a four hour period. We did some work brainstorming ways to stay healthy in cold weather and the types of jobs people have in these areas as well.

Mr. Fisher's class has library tomorrow and Ms. Zimmermann on Thursday. Please return any outstanding items. If your child received a letter regarding LOST BOOK charges, please send in the amount for Mrs. P.

Remember to track Reading... Give it a Shot
100 minutes = 1 Calgary Flames trading card

Good afternoon,

For morning activity today, we did an increasing pattern. We also did a number of the day which was 64. We had to add 7, we had to subtract 12, subtract 8, we had to find the next 5 odd numbers, and the next 5 even numbers.

In gym we continued our stations. We could do overhand or underhand throwing in lacrosse, in hockey we could use the regular sticks, and in football we could throw at the nets or the pylons.

After gym, we worked on our pen-pal letters.

Following recess, room 7 had music and library while room 8 did health.

After lunch, we did our silent reading.

For the rest of our afternoon, we worked on science. Our current science unit is connected to our social studies unit about the arctic. We will be learning about hot and cold temperature. Today we talked about various ways we could heat or cool our homes. We came up with a list as a group and then made one independently.

Reminder, book orders are due on Friday.

More About Nunavut

Good afternoon!

We started our morning with an increasing pattern and an addition/subtraction question. We were given the core of a pattern and we had to increase it. Once we did that, we did a math question starting with the number 55.

After gym, we continued on with our Pen Pal Letters. We are working very hard, and some of us will get to start our good copy tomorrow. When we came in from recess, Mr. Fisher's class went to music while Ms. Zimmermann's class finished their new name tags for their coat hooks. When we all gathered before lunch, we read a story and did some show and tell.

After lunch, we did some silent reading before getting together with Mrs. Grunert's class to map Nunavut. We coloured in the water surrounding the territory, the main land, and surrounding islands. We also had to locate and label Iqaluit on our maps.

Busy Monday

Happy Monday!

We had quite a busy day covering lots of different information. We started the morning by writing a walking story about our weekends. We wrote up until gym where we continued with our activity stations.

Before recess, we continued to work on our Pen Pal Letters. We are hoping to send them out by the end of the week if we can. After recess, Ms. Zimmermann's class had music while Mr. Fisher's class did a read-aloud. When we all gathered before lunch, we got our new spelling words for the week.

After lunch, we did some great silent reading before getting together with Mrs. Grunert's class  to learn some science. Today's topic was all about temperature, and things that are hotter or colder than Nunavut. We came up with different planets, countries, and items before we labelled a giant thermometer. Before our clean up, we read some more of our book Polar Bears Past Bedtime.

Different Stories

Good afternoon!

This morning, we started our day by creating a walking story. A walking story is one which doesn't have a big moment or action (climax). We wrote four sentences about spring. When we finished this we went to gym where we continued on with the stations we started earlier this week.

Before recess, we listened to a book called Mercy Watson Goes for a Ride. When we came in from recess, Ms. Zimmermann's class did some word work while Mr. Fisher's class went to music.

After lunch, we did some quiet reading, but it wasn't our best day. We then worked on finishing our walking story, and also started working on a climbing story which has an exciting part or a problem (climax). Our reading buddies joined us for a little while before we got ready to go home.

REMINDERS:

Tomorrow is the last day to bring in Jump Rope for Heart pledge forms! Prizes and totals will be determined tomorrow so not late forms are accepted.

Nunavut's Flower

Good afternoon!

During morning activity we continued creating our increasing patterns from yesterday, we needed to come up with 5 different ones. We worked on that all the way to gym.

After gym, we worked on the rough draft of our PenPal Letters. We are hoping to send the out as soon as possible so we will continue to work on these throughout the week.

When we came back from gym, Ms. Zimmermann's class went to music, and Mr. Fisher's class did yoga and then went to library. Ms. Zimmermann's class did yoga after music until lunch.

After lunch, we did 30 minutes of quiet reading which was fantastic. We then got together with Mrs. G's class to continue working on our Nunavut study. We learned about the land and some key words we came up with were: tundra and permafrost. Ask your child what those words mean and why they are important to Nunavut. We did research with a partner to find out what the official flower of Nunavut is....

Here's what we learned:

It's called the Purple Saxifrage and became the official flower of Nunavut on May 1st, 2000.

Jump Rope for Heart pledge envelopes are due back on FRIDAY! No late forms/envelopes will be accepted.

Ms. Zimmermann's class has library tomorrow morning... please remember to bring in any outstanding books!

Welcome Back!

Good afternoon and welcome back to Grade 2!
We are now just a few months away from summer so we are starting to prepare ourselves for Grade 3.

This morning, we started our day by writing 6 sentences about how we spent our break.
When we came back from gym, we continued reading about daredevils and their notorious adventures. Today we learned about Phillipe Petit who walked on a cable wire between the World Trade Centres in 1974.

After recess, Mr. Fisher's class went to music while Ms. Zimmermann's class had some fun and played some silent ball. When we all got together before lunch, we had a class meeting regarding expectations and behaviors. We talked about how things need to change in our classroom to make it a more respectful and safe because a lot of students continue to make poor decisions that affect others every day.

Quiet reading was our activity after lunch before we moved into some math this afternoon. Earlier in the year we learned about repeating patterns and their features such as the core and attributes. Today, we learned about an increasing pattern.

Below is an example of an increasing pattern... ask your child to explain why this is an increasing pattern and not a repeating one.

We will also learn about decreasing patterns later this week. Encourage your child to practice their increasing pattern while explaining it.

Ms. Zimmermann's class has music tomorrow... if your child chose to bring their recorder home for the break, please remember to bring it tomorrow!

REMINDERS:

Jump Rope for Heart forms MUST be back by Friday! If they are returned late, students will not be getting a prize for their fundraising efforts.

Mr. Fisher's class has Library tomorrow (Wednesday), please remember to return any outstanding books.

If you were unable to attend March 17th and 18th conferences, please contact Mr. Fisher or Ms. Zimmermann if you'd like to schedule a meeting.

Almost Spring Break!

Good afternoon,

Today for morning activity we made new name tags for our coat hooks. Tomorrow we will be switching our coat hook placement.

During gym we continued to work on Jump Rope for Heart. We are really enjoying skipping!

After gym, room 8 visited the book fair while room 7 read a story on the smartboard.

Following recess, room 8 had music while room 7 worked on scrambled sentences. We had to put them in the correct order and make sure we used capitals and periods.

Before lunch, room 7 visited the book fair. The book fair will be open during student-led conferences if you wish to visit.

After lunch, we did some quiet reading.

For the remainder of the afternoon we did a math/art activity. We made some rainbows for St. Patrick's Day. Each colour of the rainbow was a different length. We had to measure the strips and then glue them to our paper to make a 3D rainbows.

Conferences are tomorrow and Friday! Please make sure to book an appointment.

Tomorrow is early dismissal. The bell will ring at 11am.

Have a great evening!

Penpals!

Good afternoon,

This morning we practiced our letter writing. We had to write a letter to anyone we wanted and we included juicy words, and 8 sentences.

Today we started Jump Rope for Heart. We noticed we're getting better at skipping. Please remember to sign up online to fundraise.

After gym we finished our planning for our Inukshuk. We had to include a picture, a date, a title, and a sentence.

After recess, room 7 had music and room 8 did some ketchup. We continued to work on ketchup until lunch.

This afternoon, we received our letters from our penpals. We paired up with another student to write a response. We will have to include 10 sentences in our final copy.

Reminder, room 7 has library tomorrow.

Rock Walk for Inukshuks

It's the week before Spring Break and I think we're all ready for a little time away from school.

We started morning activity by reviewing our spelling words. This week we have 30 words on our test because it is review week for us. These 30 words come from the last 3 weeks of spelling tests.

Instead of gym, we had a Jump Rope for Heart assembly to kick off our school's fundraising efforts. Tonight, your child should have come home with a JUMP! Envelope which allows them to track any and all donations they may receive. There are prizes depending on how much money is raised per student.

After recess, Ms. Zimmermann's class had music while Mr. Fisher's class did some ketchup work. Because we missed gym, we spent the rest of the time before lunch playing soccer baseball in the field.

We did some more silent reading after lunch, and then went on our Rock Hunt. We collected rocks of all shapes and sizes to use for building our Inukshuks as part of our Let's Visit Nunavut study. Once we had all of our rocks, we started to plan out how we were going to build them. We will take some time throughout the week to get them assembled.

REMINDERS:

Ms. Zimmermann's book orders are due back by Thursday, March 17th by 11AM. Please do not bring orders to conferences.

Student Involved Conferences are on Thursday and Friday this week!

Let's Visit Nunavut!

Good afternoon,

This morning we did task cards for morning activity. We had to do five before we went to gym. Most students are now able to complete that many before gym

After gym, we read a bit more from our novel, Polar Bears Past Bedtime. We are working on a cross curricular unit on the arctic.

After recess, room 7 did a tidy up of the classroom and a movement break and room 8 had music. Following that, we all went to the learning commons.

This afternoon, we did quiet read. We did an excellent job of quietly reading today!

For the remainder of the day, we began our new unit on Nunavut. The students learned some facts about Nunavut and did the title page for our book. We drew the flag of Nunavut on the cover.

We will be building some Inuksuks for our unit. If students have SMALL rocks at home, they may bring them in for the project.

Reminder, tonight is the pizza party. Students must be accompanied by an adult. It is from 6-8.

Spelling test is tomorrow!

Mr. Fisher will be away tomorrow, Mrs. Fillmore will be in as a guest teacher.
